Sarracenia ‘Neurox’ still looking lovely in the Greenhouse at the moment.

This weekend the weather has been pretty good with a nice amount of sunshine. It was a good weekend which allowed me to get a lot done in the Greenhouse. However it looks like the weather is going back to cold and frosty.

I’m hoping to make more time to carry on with the various tasks in the greenhouse, I feel like I’ve only made a small dent in what needs to be done.

Happy New Year Everyone!

As the year draws to a close, it’s nice to look back on this year’s highlights. I have to admit, 2024 has been a bit rocky for me but my biggest highlight has to be saying goodbye to my old greenhouse and saying hello to a new larger one with more grow room and in turn more potential!

It’s gemmae season for the Pygmy sundews!

Pygmy Drosera as their name suggests are small sundews and they have got to be my favourite group of sundews too. They can be anything from a couple of millimetres up to 5cm in size, their dew shines bright with complementing vibrant flowers in late spring/summer.

In the cooler season they produce a cluster of small buds in their centre known as gemmae, this cellular bud can be sown like seed to produce more of that plant. It’s a super quick and easy method of propagation!

For me these plants are super collectible, I now have 28 different species and hybrids with the intention to collect as many as possible!

Sarracenia ‘Black Sheer’, a plant where pictures never do it justice.

This beautiful black and white Sarracenia is a true gem amongst Sarracenia cultivars, its pitchers are strikingly dark contrasting on a lovely white. I’ve only had mine for just over a year now and is only small but it’s such a lovely plant which still stands out within the collection!

In person it looks a lot darker which I always find hard to capture on camera. I can’t wait to see this one mature and get even darker. But this plant is a definite must have for any collector.

Last night I gave a talk in Colchester to a gardening club, giving an introduction to carnivorous plants which included their care, propagation plus various facts.

I brought along some of my plants to display as well as to sell. Everyone who attended seemed very engaged and asked lots of questions about how they can incorporate the plants into their growing conditions at home.

I have given a few talks now and I do really enjoy giving them especially to meet planty people and share my passion with them!

THE BIG REVEAL!

This year has certainly been rocky for me which meant I had neglected the carnivorous plants a bit. But despite everything that was going on I had decided to get a new greenhouse, a space so all the plants can be under one roof and allow me to manage it all a bit better.

So after several months of hard work and preparation the new greenhouse is up with new handmade benches, new trays were purchased and put in and finally all the plants have moved in. A lot has had to be cut back and tidied early but I can’t wait to see how it all looks next year!

I’m hoping to get back into my social media some more hopefully in the new year if all goes well so watch this space!

Sarracenia Black Widow X SHY141

Some may remember I posted another Sarracenia from the same batch a while back which was more slender and a very dark Sarracenia. This one on the other hand is the only pubescent one from the whole batch of seedlings, although not as dark I love the strong deep red colouration it has plus the larger fanned lid and wider tube.

This is the best it has done this year along with the others I kept back from the batch so there is still potential it’ll produce darker pitchers later on!

Cephalotus follicularis ‘Dudley Watts’

It’s was only the beginning of this year I started collecting cephalotus cultivars and the top of the list was ‘Dudley Watts’ so made sure it was the first one I brought.

I have really enjoyed growing cephalotus cultivars especially this one due to its large peristomes which just add that bit of character to the traps

My ‘Ping rock’ looking great in the Greenhouse!

For those of you who have followed me for a while might recognise this Pinguicula lava rock from my YouTube videos or even my instagram reel when I first created it. A few years later it has done amazingly, the plants have really filled out and established great.

This rock consists of a lot of common Pinguicula such as cyclosecta, weser, Tina and esseriana which have been good easy growers for my first time with a rock set up. Going forward I’m hoping to make a couple more using a variety of different Pinguicula!

Roridula gorgonias

Something a little different to post from my collection. I’ve had this unique plant for a couple of years now, started with two but unfortunately lost one during the winter.

It was only a small plant when I first received it but now it is very tall to a point it has started to bend from the weight and has also started to split into two plants. I haven’t attempted to repot it yet as I’ve heard it can be tricky so would be interested to know if anyone has had any experience repotting a roridula?

Sarracenia leucophylla alba

We haven’t had much of a summer this year with plenty of rain, wind and cool weather but as we are getting later into the growing season the leucophylla are starting to shine with lots of lovely white traps beginning to appear. I’m hoping for some pure whites this year.

Sarracenia ‘Monster’ living up to its name!

My Sarracenia Monster is definitely a show stopper this year as it is just short of an impressive 42 inches in height making it my tallest Sarracenia in my collection so far!

This plant is beautiful regardless of its height, with beautiful veining in its creamy lid and a deep purple lip.

Sarracenia oreophila (Sand Mountain) X Sarracenia flava var. atropurpurea (Blackwater, Florida)

This beautiful red beast definitely stands out in the collection. Its large pitchers and fanned hood make it a lovely plant, I also love its vibrant red pitchers which have darker red veins running through the hood.

I got this plant originally from Wacks Wicked Plants and has always been an impressive grower.

This beautiful tall sundew is particularly unique amongst sundews. In the full sun it gets a lovely red colour, which looks lovely in this neat cluster.

One of my selected seedlings, Sarracenia SHY141 X ‘Black Widow’

This Sarracenia was selected from a bunch of seedlings, originally sown from seed in 2019. This one of particular has been a real favourite of mine due to the intense dark colour, a picture really doesn’t do justice. It has slender pitchers with an almost smooth like appearance. The lids in particular are super dark. The pitchers start off red with a yellow tinge in the lid which gets darker as it matures, I wonder if it will get darker than this.

The plant definitely resembles a lot of Black Widow so it will be interesting to compare it with my black widow when it too colours up. The seeds were originally from West Cornwall Carnivores.

Some highlights from Gardeners World Live at the NEC in Birmingham!

On Sunday I attended Gardeners World Live which was a great day full of plants from houseplants to garden plants, even carnivorous plants. They also have a great selection of food stalls and sundries items on display.

I came away with a few new plants, mostly succulents and aeoniums but it was lovely to see so many displays and a chance to see the amazing set ups from Hampshire Carnivorous Plants and Shropshire Sarracenia.

I definitely recommend the show if you’ve never been

Sarracenia x moorei cv. ‘Adrian Slack’

This beautiful boutique of newly opened pitchers on my Adrian Slack is looking particularly nice this year. This was one of my first Sarracenia cultivars I brought several years back and this is probably the best display it has put out after being placed into a large specimen pot last year. Just waiting for the pitchers to colour up a bit more as they mature and I’m sure it’ll be a showstopper!

The main Sarracenia collection is looking great at the moment showing off various shapes, heights and colours

We have had a interesting year to say the least in the UK regarding the weather with highs and lows in the temperature and a lot of rain which hasn’t been the best for the plants after a slow start to the year.

However, I am happy how everything is now coming together with a few plants reaching the top of my favourites list for this year, it changes each year and is often decided by plants which surprise me due to shape, height or even colour!

Sarracenia flava var. rubricorpra (Don Schnell)

This beautiful dark flava has been a lovely addition to the collection. I originally picked this up from Predator Plants last year after being drawn to it amongst the sea of Sarracenias at Steve’s nursery.

This year it has continued to produce those super dark pitchers with a contrasting yellow lid making it stand out amongst others. Although labelled as an atropurpurea, I have also seen contrasting information about it being a rubricorpra due to the yellow lid and it never being a solid colour. So will be interesting to know what anyone else knows about this plant (EDIT) confirmed as a rubricorpra.

Helmingham Hall 2024!

This week has been full of plant shows and fairs, first with Chelsea both Press Day on Monday and again Volunteering on Thursday and today I visited Helmingham Hall for their Spring Plant Fair for the first time!

Was great to see so many nurseries and what they had to offer. Came away with some nice new plants including a new sundew, Drosera rubrifolia from Predator Plants!

Sarracenia ’Asbo’, an absolute beautiful beast of a Sarracenia and one of my plant highlights of this year so far!

This is the biggest pitcher my Sarracenia Asbo has produced for me so far and it is a stunner. This wide mouthed pitcher has so much character and its size this year allows it to hold a tennis ball in its mouth!
